What every new mum needs to know about piles
What are piles?
Piles occur when extra pressure is exerted on the blood vessels around your back passage, causing them to swell up and become inflamed. Piles can develop inside your bottom - what are known as internal piles - or protrude from your bottom, in which case they're called external piles.
Piles are very common indeed: one in two people in the UK will get them at some point in their lives. Pregnant women and new mums even are more prone to piles due to the weight of that ever growing baby bump and all that pushing during labour. But there's no need to suffer in silence, there are plenty of things you can do to treat them.
Whar are the signs?
If you have piles you may notice blood on the toilet paper after a bowel movement. Other signs include:
• Discomfort or pain after a bowel movement
• Occasional sharp pains inside your bottom
• Small lumps just inside your bottom
• Hard lump(s) protruding from your bottom
Treating piles
If you have piles for the first time, there's absolutely no need to feel embarrassed. Remember, about half of us will get them at some point. Plus, the sooner you treat them, the sooner you can get back to enjoying your new baby.
The Anusol® range provides effective, soothing relief from the pain and discomfort of piles, and you can choose from creams, ointments and suppositories. Each Anusol® product contains an astringent to soothe the area and reduce swelling, an antiseptic to reduce the risk of infection and help protect sore skin, and an emollient to help relieve discomfort. No wonder it’s the UK's best-selling treatment for piles.
