As we have started to welcome the warmer weather it means that Emily is thirstier and is sometimes even sweating when we take her out of her car seat. I have started to give her cooled boiled water on the particularly sunny days. Apparently breast milk should suffice in hot weather as the temperature self regulates on hotter days to a cooler temperature. But by giving her water it quenches her thirst and gives me a break from increased breastfeeding.
Emily’s hand eye coordination is developing before our eyes. At first she learnt to suck her fists and then she found her thumb. It was amusing watching her, just a few weeks ago, aim for her mouth with her fists, missing and walloping herself in the nose or chin and leaving a trail of slobber across her cheek. But now she is able to suck on her thumb and fingers and they seem to have taken over the role of a pacifier/dummy. She will often suck on them if she wakes during the night and even in her sleep.
Her tiny fingers are also becoming more agile and she is now able to grip objects and promptly puts them in her mouth. She doesn’t discriminate – anything she can grip goes in including her butterfly and the nose of her cloth mouse doll. The best news of all is that she is starting to sleep through the night. Some experts claim that sleeping through the night is uninterrupted five hours sleep. Emily isn’t consistent yet but she will sleep anywhere from five to 10 hours at time. It’s heaven to wake up at 7am and realise you haven’t been woken during the night to feed her.
However, I am still waking up between 4am and 5am for a toilet break. If she isn't silent and still, she is sucking on her fingers while asleep. I am now able to ignore the furious sucking unless it is accompanied by wide eyed screams that demand I feed her.
The next step is to move her out of her Moses basket into her cot and into her bedroom but “I’m” not ready yet. As Rich pointed out, it is only natural that I don’t want to sleep without her as I haven’t been separated from her since she was born. I like to watch her sleep and feel secure knowing that I can take a peep at her at any time. It will be hard having her in a separate room but we managed to break out of the habit of having her sleep in the same bed as us – it is just another inevitable step towards my baby growing up.
